November, 2007:
Firearms training is a source of liability
Over the years Law Enforcement has developed into an honored profession.
No longer can an agency hand a gun, badge and ticket book to a new recruit
and send him out into the streets to protect and serve. New recruits must
now attend a rigid training program and pass numerous tests in order to pin
the badge to the front of their uniform and proclaim that they are Police
Officers. Officers of yesteryear came into the profession after graduation
from a police academy and never participated in any advanced training.
As technology changes so have the education requirements of our beloved
police officers.
Firearms is one such area that needs to be visited on a regular basis.
Marksmanship is a perishable skill. One must train on a regular basis in order
to be proficient with his/her firearm. An officer cannot attend one range
session a year, shoot for qualification and expect to be proficient with
their firearm. Additionally and more importantly, qualification and
re-qualification does not constitute training. Over the years numerous
programs have been developed to provide that training on a regular basis
to assist in the marksmanship abilities of officers. However, agencies that
only train how to shoot and not when to shoot are at great risk for liability.
Firearms training simulators assist us in training officers on when to shoot.
Proper use of a simulator should include use of force options, not just deadly
force. The cost of purchasing a simulator for an agency to use once or twice a
year can be staggering. We at INTACTT understand this. We have purchased a
state of the art simulator that is available for your use at reasonable rates.
Our simulator is available for your use at a location of your choosing.
This allows minimal to no travel time for your Officers to participate in this real
world training environment. Our entire staff is comprised of active and retired
police officers that are all certified firearms instructors through the state of
Ohio (with combined training experience of over 125 years).
We have sought and obtained pre-approval for training to count for up to 8 hours
towards your 24 hours of continuous professional education training requirement
through the OHIO PEACE OFFICER TRAINING COUNCIL. Don't let your agency get caught
short. Protect your Officers and Your Agency. Provide them with this valuable training.
